How to work from home with kids

In our changing world, many of us have to work from home. Added to the stress of change is the fact that schools are closed and children are also at home. It is quite difficult to find a balance between having fun and working at home. Working with children from home is even harder.
Here are some tips to help you to work from home with your kids.

Arrange your own space

Try to find a place in the house that will become your work space. Although it is tempting to just lie down on the couch with a laptop, there are many factors in the house that can distract us.
Ideally you can request your own room in the house, an existing spare bedroom, veranda or other space. If this is not possible, then set up a desktop where your work area may be and forbid others to use it.
Do everything you can to create some physically separate space from the rest of the house. If you need to use the bedroom and dining room, you can buy a special dividing wall for $100, which will separate your work space from the rest of the room.
Then set the rules. For example: “When your mother/father are sitting at the desk, don’t bother them.”
Remember, young children are accustomed to playing with their parents when they return home from work. When your children see you at home, they think they rightly want to play and have fun with you. Children do not understand what is happening at this special time, so it is important to set boundaries and rules.

Make a schedule

In addition to creating a workplace for yourself, create a work schedule. Let the family know when you are working and when you plan to take a break.
For example, you can tell your children that you are going to work from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., then take a 30-minute break to play with them.
If your job makes it difficult to create such a schedule, then create a symbol when you are working/not working. A handmade sign that indicates if you are available or busy.
People who work from home will tell you that setting boundaries is difficult. You never actually return from work when you working from home, which is why you can easily get involved in the work process without breaks. Setting a daily schedule will help you overcome this.
If your children are small and fall asleep during the day or go to bed early, consider their bedtime as your work time.
Nowadays, it is a problem for many people not only to have children at home. You may also need to create a schedule with your spouse.

Use headphones

Most people don’t use headphones when they’re in a corporate setting. Now that has changed. Maybe now is the best time to invest money in high quality headphones to work from home.
Use headphones to suppress external noise and focus on the case. If you don’t like listening to music while working, you can download apps and listen to white noise or other sounds to help you concentrate on the project.
Be sure to buy headphones with noise canceling technology. Find a headphones with a microphone if you need to have a lot of calls and video conferencing from home.

Establish a reward system

Now everyone is worrying. Your children are accustomed to being at school and this is irritating and difficult for them too.
Establish a reward system that will thank them for respecting your work space and schedule. You can also reward them for doing new things such like walking a dog.
For example, give your children a star every day to make them respect your workplace. Reward them with dessert or a new video game.

Download instead of streaming

Zoom meetings. Skype. Netflix
As a rule, most of them are not implemented at the same time. This is different in our current situation, when everyone is at home at the same time.
And when you need to get a job done, you need to make sure you have enough capacity to maintain your work calls and other functions.
Both Netflix and Amazon Prime allow users to download many movies and shows before running them in stream mode (Spotify also offers music download). Ask your kids which show they like, then download them at night, while not using the Internet connection for work.

Give the kids a project

When you know you’re going to be busy, make sure the kids are busy too. Schedule a time for reading, film, or homework assignment when you need to have a phone call or video conference. Or allow them to play a video game or other desired activity only when you are working so as not to interfere.
If you plan wisely for everyone, you will be able to keep the peace in the house – at least for a while!

You don’t have to be a superhero

Working from home is difficult even in the best of conditions. Working with the family from home is even more difficult. Add to this the need for children to learn when they are on extended vacations, this pressure is enough to make even the best people give up in despair.

Remember, this too will pass. The mental well-being of your family is more important than being sure that you will not miss a small thing from the school program. We are all in the same boat.

Before we teach children at home, first focus on their overall well-being. You don’t have to be a superheroes. Just do your best to follow these tips.
