All my life I have tried to live surrounded by people who were better than me. I always admire my parents, sisters and brothers, I try to spend as much time as possible and learn more from them. This also applies to my wife, children, grandchildren and other relatives. The same principle applies at work.
I couldn’t do much at the start of my first business, but I was lucky and was able to find people who could do it. I didn’t have any special possibilities, but I knew how to get people interested in me who had that possibilities. I found the smartest accountants, the best musicians, the most brilliant pilots – people who were better than me. And we learned from each other. So if you want to be successful and achieve a lot in life, spend time with people like you want to be. As coach Jim Ronn said, he spends time with an average of 5 people. If you want to be an active person, you have to achieve a lot, but if you spend time in the company of lazy people, it will make your life difficult.
That’s why I love contacting with businessmen. When I travel around the world, working with our foundation Virgin Unite, meeting new startups, I like contacting with them and exchanging ideas. Entrepreneurs also often visit us on the island of Necker, at various events of the Virgin Unite. When you are surrounded by people who share your views, who want good for the world, it inspires anyone to achieve more.
Of course, Jimmy’s expression refers to the law of average numbers. I never believed in medium magnitude. As Todd Rose noted in his book “The End of Average”, we need to understand that the average person doesn’t exist, so stop attributing yourself to a category that can’t realize and realize big dreams. So if we judge ourselves by whether or not we do it, we will never notice it. The world is made up of extraordinary people, so don’t waste time being normal.
It is very important to have relationships with people who look like your ideal. Look for them everywhere and always. Go out and get as much impression as possible from the world. If you limit yourself to just family, best friends, colleagues, city, and even country, you will not be able to achieve great things. Remember that any person will win by expanding the horizon.
